Attire inspired by the Regency era (approximately 1795-1837) is enthusiastically encouraged, though not strictly required.
For ladies, consider empire-waist gowns, long gloves, and elegant updos adorned with feathers or jewels. Gentlemen might don tailcoats, high collars, waistcoats, and breeches or formal trousers. The Regency Era was softer and more dapper than the later Victorian period - think long gloves and shawls, cravats, and high socks rather than the lavish, bold Victorian style with huge ruffled dresses and long suit coats with top hats.
Modern formal attire with Regency touches is perfectly acceptable—a long gown with gloves or a modern suit with a cravat or waistcoat shall suffice splendidly. Any and all formal wear of any era is more than acceptable, but remember, your ensemble will help determine your prospects in the Diamond of the Summer contest!
